Municipality

Surpierre is a rural commune in the canton of Fribourg, in the Broye district on the edge of the canton of Vaud. It combines historical heritage and natural landscapes, offering its inhabitants a peaceful environment in which to live.

The village was first mentioned in 1142 under the name ‘Super Petram’, in reference to its dominant position in the Broye valley. Over the years, it has belonged to several noble families, including the Cossonays. The castle, built in the 13th century, was partially destroyed during the Burgundy Wars (1476) and rebuilt in 1536 as an administrative residence. The castle retains medieval features such as a square tower and Gothic windows. Restored and extended over the centuries, it is now listed as a cultural asset of national importance.
